5 Things to Always Check Before Buying a Used Console

JUN 9, 20264 MIN READRESPAWNCONSOLES.COM

Most used console purchases go fine. But the ones that don't are usually avoidable. Here are the five checks that separate a great deal from an expensive mistake.

01

MOST USED CONSOLE PURCHASES ARE FINE

The vast majority of used console purchases on eBay go exactly as expected. You buy, it arrives, it works, you game. But when things go wrong — a broken disc drive, a console that overheats, a listing that turns out to be a console-only sale with no controller or cables — it's almost always because one of these five checks was skipped. Take two minutes before every purchase.

02

1. SELLER FEEDBACK — THE MOST IMPORTANT CHECK

Look at the seller's feedback score before anything else. You want 98% positive or higher, with at least 50 reviews. Then read the negative feedback specifically. A seller who sold 500 items perfectly but has three recent negatives about broken consoles is a red flag. A seller with 100% feedback across 200 electronics sales is a green flag. The feedback system is eBay's most powerful buyer protection tool — use it.

03

2. READ THE FULL DESCRIPTION — NOT JUST THE TITLE

Sellers are required to disclose known defects in the item description. Read the whole thing. Look for phrases like 'disc drive not tested,' 'HDMI port slightly loose,' 'fan louder than normal,' or 'sold as-is.' These phrases are legally protective for the seller — and a warning for you. If the description is three sentences and vague, message the seller and ask directly: 'Does everything work including disc drive, all ports, and fan?' A good seller will answer promptly.

04

3. CHECK WHAT'S ACTUALLY INCLUDED

The title says 'PS5 Console' for $230 — great deal, right? Check what's actually in the listing. Controller included? HDMI cable? Power cable? A PS5 without a controller means buying one for $65+. A listing without cables means immediate extra purchases. A deal that looks $30 cheaper than competitors but is missing a controller is actually more expensive. Always calculate the total cost of what you need, not just the listed price.

05

4. DEMAND REAL PHOTOS

Stock photography is a red flag. The listing should show actual photos of the specific unit being sold — front, back, all ports, and power-on if possible. If a listing uses only manufacturer stock images, message the seller and request real photos before buying. If they can't or won't provide them, walk away. Real photos prove the item exists as described and let you spot visible damage before purchase.

06

5. NEVER PAY OUTSIDE EBAY

This one is simple and non-negotiable. Always pay through eBay's checkout. Never use Venmo, PayPal Friends & Family, bank transfer, cryptocurrency, or any other off-platform payment method — even if the seller offers a discount for doing so. eBay Money Back Guarantee covers you for items that don't arrive or aren't as described. The moment you pay outside eBay's system, that protection disappears entirely. The off-platform discount is not worth the risk.
