Console Storage — How Much Do You Actually Need?

JUN 10, 20264 MIN READRESPAWNCONSOLES.COM

1TB, 2TB, 4TB — storage options keep growing. Here's how to figure out exactly how much you need so you stop running out of space and stop overpaying.

01

THE STORAGE PROBLEM IS REAL

Game file sizes have exploded this generation. Call of Duty takes over 100GB on its own. A handful of modern games fills a 1TB drive. If you play regularly across multiple titles, storage management becomes a constant chore — deleting games to make room, waiting for downloads before you can play. Getting the right amount of storage upfront saves time and frustration.

02

HOW MUCH SPACE DO MODERN GAMES TAKE?

PS5 games average 40–80GB each with some (like Call of Duty, Destiny 2, GTA V) exceeding 100GB. Xbox Series X games are similar. Nintendo Switch games are much smaller — most major titles are 10–16GB, though newer releases push higher. Retro games are tiny — entire libraries of SNES or N64 games take less than 1GB total. Know your platform before deciding on storage size.

03

THE RIGHT AMOUNT BY PLATFORM

PS5: the base 825GB internal fills fast. Add 1TB minimum, 2TB recommended for anyone who plays regularly. Xbox Series X: the 1TB internal is more comfortable than the PS5's 825GB but still fills. A 1TB Seagate Storage Expansion Card or compatible NVMe is the clean upgrade. Nintendo Switch: a 256GB microSD card is plenty for most players — 512GB if you download everything digitally. PS4: the 500GB base model fills extremely fast; upgrade to 1TB or 2TB internal immediately.

04

INTERNAL VS EXTERNAL STORAGE

PS5 and Xbox Series X support both internal NVMe expansion and external USB storage — but with a catch. PS5 and Series X games can only run from internal storage (internal SSD or the official expansion slot). External USB drives on current-gen consoles are for storage only — you archive games there and copy them back to internal storage to play. On PS4 and Xbox One, external drives work for both storage and playback. Plan accordingly.

05

WHAT TO BUY ON EBAY

NVMe SSDs for PS5/Xbox Series X: 1TB drives sell for $60–$90, 2TB for $90–$140. MicroSD cards for Switch: 256GB sells for $20–$35, 512GB for $35–$60. PS4 internal hard drives: 1TB sells for $30–$50, 2TB for $40–$70. Always check the seller feedback and confirm the storage is genuine — counterfeit microSD cards with false capacity ratings are a real issue on the used market. Stick to name brands: Samsung, SanDisk, WD, Seagate.
