Both subscriptions have grown a lot. We compared the libraries, prices, and value to help you decide where to spend your money.
Both Sony and Microsoft now have multi-tier subscription services. Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus have grown into massive platforms that can save — or cost — you serious money depending on how you use them. Here's a straight comparison.
Game Pass Ultimate runs $19.99/month and includes access to 400+ games, EA Play, cloud gaming on mobile, and Xbox Live Gold for online multiplayer. The killer feature: every first-party Microsoft game releases on Game Pass day one. That means Halo, Forza, Starfield, and every future Xbox studio game at no extra cost the day they launch.
PlayStation Plus has three tiers. Essential ($9.99/mo) gives you monthly free games and online multiplayer. Extra ($14.99/mo) adds a catalog of 400+ PS4 and PS5 games. Premium ($17.99/mo) adds classic PS1/PS2/PS3 titles and game trials. The big difference from Game Pass: Sony's first-party games do NOT go into PS Plus on launch day.
Game Pass wins on pure value per dollar, especially if you play first-party Xbox games. PS Plus Extra has a strong catalog but it lags behind on new releases. If Spider-Man 2 or God of War matters to you, you're still buying those separately — PS Plus won't have them at launch.
Game Pass Ultimate includes Xbox Cloud Gaming — stream games to your phone, tablet, or browser without a console. PS Plus Premium has a streaming option too but it's more limited and has a worse track record for latency. Cloud gaming on Game Pass is genuinely usable. On PS Plus it's more of a bonus feature.
Game Pass Ultimate wins on raw value, especially for players who enjoy Microsoft's first-party studios or play on both console and PC. PS Plus is worth it for online multiplayer and the monthly free games, but it's not the game-library subscription Game Pass is. If you're on PlayStation, subscribe to Essential. If you're on Xbox, go Ultimate.
