Microsoft has raised Game Pass prices twice since launch. The library has grown but so has the cost. Here's an honest 2026 verdict on whether Game Pass Ultimate is still the best deal in gaming.
Xbox Game Pass has evolved significantly since its launch. In 2026 the main tier is Game Pass Ultimate at $19.99/month, which includes access to 500+ games, EA Play, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Xbox Live Gold for online multiplayer. There's also a cheaper PC Game Pass tier ($11.99/month) for PC-only players. Microsoft has raised prices since the original launch, and the question is whether the value still holds up.
The Game Pass library has grown to over 500 titles and continues expanding. The standout value remains Microsoft's first-party commitment: every Xbox Game Studios title — Halo, Forza, Fable, Avowed, Indiana Jones, and future releases — launches on Game Pass day one at no extra cost. In 2025 and 2026 this included several major releases that would have cost $70 each at retail. For players who enjoy Xbox first-party output, this alone justifies the subscription.
Games rotate in and out of Game Pass regularly. A game you're halfway through can leave the service with 14 days notice. When games leave, you're offered a purchase discount — but you still have to buy them to keep playing. This is Game Pass's biggest weakness and something players overlook when calculating value. If you play games intensively from start to finish quickly, rotation is rarely an issue. If you play slowly or return to games often, it's worth tracking the catalog carefully.
Xbox Cloud Gaming has improved dramatically. In 2026 you can stream most Game Pass titles to your phone, tablet, browser, or Smart TV without a console. Input latency has improved significantly and is now acceptable for most genres — platformers, RPGs, strategy games play well. Fast-twitch shooters and fighting games still favour local hardware. Cloud gaming means Game Pass has value even without an Xbox console, which dramatically changes the value proposition.
At $19.99/month that's $240/year. If you play three games per month that would each cost $60 at retail, Game Pass pays for itself. The question is whether you actually play that many games. Light players who finish one or two games per month and replay favourites may be better served buying games outright. Heavy players who constantly try new things and enjoy first-party Xbox content are getting enormous value. Be honest about your playing habits.
Game Pass Ultimate is still the best value subscription in gaming for the right player. If you own an Xbox Series X or S, play regularly, and enjoy Microsoft's first-party studios — it's a no-brainer. If you primarily play PlayStation or Nintendo exclusives, or you replay the same few games for months, the value diminishes. The $19.99 price point is higher than it was at launch, but the library and cloud gaming improvements have kept pace. For most Xbox owners: subscribe.
