How to Buy a Used Console on eBay Without Getting Burned

Buying a used console on eBay can save you $100–$200 compared to retail. But there are risks. Bad sellers, broken units, missing accessories. This guide tells you exactly what to check before you buy so you don't get burned.

Before anything else, look at the seller's feedback score and percentage. You want 98% positive or higher, with at least 50 reviews. Read the negative feedback specifically — if someone returned a console that was broken on arrival, that's a red flag. A seller with 100% feedback and 500 sales is almost always safe.

Sellers are required to disclose known defects. Read the full description — not just the title. Look for phrases like 'disc drive not tested,' 'HDMI port loose,' 'fan louder than normal,' or 'sold as-is.' These are warnings. If the description is vague or overly short, message the seller and ask directly about the condition.

Stock images are a red flag. The listing should include actual photos of the unit being sold — front, back, and ports. If the seller only has stock photography, ask them to send real photos before you buy. If they won't, walk away.

Check whether the listing includes: HDMI cable, power cable, controller, and any original packaging. Controllers alone can cost $60–$70 new. A listing that's $40 cheaper than another but doesn't include a controller isn't actually cheaper. Factor in everything you'll need to actually play.
