The Switch 2 is out. Prices on original Switch hardware have dropped. So is it still worth picking up the original — or should you wait and save up for Switch 2?
Nintendo launched the Switch 2 in June 2025 at $449.99. It's bigger, more powerful, and the future of Nintendo's platform. So why would anyone buy the original Switch in 2026? Because the original Switch still has one of the greatest game libraries ever assembled — and used prices have dropped dramatically since the Switch 2 launched.
Used Nintendo Switch consoles have dropped significantly since the Switch 2 launched. People trading in their old Switch to fund the upgrade have flooded the used market. In 2026 you can find used Switch OLED units for $160–$220 and standard Switch units for $120–$160 on eBay. That's a serious console for a budget price.
The Nintendo Switch library is one of the greatest in gaming history. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Metroid Dread, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Hundreds of indie games that defined the last decade of gaming. You will not run out of things to play on a Switch — ever.
Here's the key consideration: most Switch 1 games play on Switch 2. So if you buy original Switch games now, they work on Switch 2 later. Your game library doesn't get left behind. This makes building a Switch game collection in 2026 a smart move regardless of which hardware you end up on.
Buy the original Switch if: you have a $150–$220 budget and want a great gaming device right now; you want Nintendo's game library without paying Switch 2 prices; you're buying for a child and don't want to spend $450 on hardware. The original Switch is still a fantastic piece of hardware with an unbeatable library at a now-great price.
Skip the original Switch if: you have the budget for a Switch 2 and want the best Nintendo hardware available; you primarily want to play new Nintendo games going forward (Switch 2 will get the biggest titles first); or you care about docked 4K output and modern performance. The Switch 2 is the future. The original Switch is an incredible value — but it is the past.
The original Nintendo Switch is absolutely still worth buying in 2026 — at the right price. Under $180 for a used unit is a great deal with one of gaming's greatest libraries attached. If you can stretch to Switch 2, do it. If you can't, the original Switch will keep you gaming for years.
