Nintendo Switch 2 Review — Is It Worth $449?

JUN 9, 20266 MIN READRESPAWNCONSOLES.COM

Nintendo's follow-up to the best-selling Switch is bigger, faster, and more capable. But at $449, is it worth it — especially with great used original Switch deals available? We break it all down.

01

NINTENDO'S BIGGEST CONSOLE LAUNCH IN YEARS

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 at $449.99 and sold out almost immediately. A year later, supply has largely stabilized and the used market has settled closer to retail pricing. The question is now less 'can I get one?' and more 'should I get one?' Here is an honest assessment.

02

WHAT IT DOES BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL

The Switch 2 is meaningfully better than the original in several key areas. The 8-inch LCD screen is larger and brighter. Docked output reaches 4K in supported titles. Performance is dramatically improved — games that struggled to hold 30fps on the original Switch run at 60fps or higher. The magnetic Joy-Con system feels more secure than the original's slide-on rails. GameChat finally gives Nintendo a functional voice communication system. The hardware is genuinely next-generation.

03

THE GAME LIBRARY ONE YEAR IN

Mario Kart World launched alongside the hardware and remains the system's standout title — an enormous, creative kart racer that showcases what the hardware can do. Beyond that, the launch year library has been solid but not spectacular. Donkey Kong Bananza is excellent. Several third-party titles received enhanced Switch 2 patches. But as of mid-2026, the system is still building its exclusive library. The original Switch's deep catalog remains a strong argument for the older hardware.

04

BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY — THE KILLER FEATURE

The Switch 2 plays the vast majority of original Switch games. This is huge. It means buying a Switch 2 doesn't orphan your existing game collection. Every Switch game you've purchased — physical or digital — works on the new hardware. Some titles even run better thanks to the improved processor. This backwards compatibility makes the Switch 2 a clear upgrade for existing Switch owners who play frequently.

05

THE CASE AGAINST BUYING AT $449

If you don't already own a Switch, the original Switch OLED at $160–$220 used represents extraordinary value. The OLED library is enormous and nearly identical to what Switch 2 will have for years. If your budget is tight, buy an original Switch and spend the savings on games. You'll get 95% of the Nintendo experience for less than half the price. The Switch 2's advantages matter more to serious Nintendo fans than casual players.

06

VERDICT

The Switch 2 is the best Nintendo console ever made. At $449 new, it's also not cheap. For existing Switch owners who play regularly: upgrade. For first-time buyers with budget flexibility: get the Switch 2, it will be supported for years. For budget-conscious buyers: the original Switch OLED at $160–$220 used is one of gaming's great bargains. There's no wrong answer — Nintendo's ecosystem is worth it at either price point.
